Krasnoyarsk is the capital of Krasnoyarsk area that is rich with mineral and forests wealth. The region stretches from the south, Krasnoyarsk, all the way to the Artic coast. The Yenisey River runs from the south to the north through all territory. In summer, passenger boats travel almost to the Artic Kara Sea. Krasnoyarsk is the nearest big city to the republic of Khakassia and Tuva.
In 1628 Andrey Dubensky with 300 Cossaks found a favorable place for building a fortress on the tongue of land between the Katcha and the Yenisey. The fortress was built to guard south-eastern borders of the expanding Russian Empire and to lie under tribute local nomadic tribes of Tatars. It was named Krasny Yar (a steep bank of reddish color) due to its position - it was situated against the background of a high and steep bank of the Yenisey composed mainly of red clay. In the 17th century Krasnoyarsk was a Cossack fort and only due the discovery of gold in the 19th century it grew to its present size.
In the beginning of the 20th century the Trans-Siberian Railway arrived here and later during World War II factories were shifted here from the west. Not so far away, upstream from the city is a hydroelectric dam that made a reservoir stretching 350km. Its beauty is imparted by outlying hills and the 2km-wide Yenisey flowing through the center. There are quite a few 19th century buildings that are located in old part of the city. Opera & Ballet Theatre, the Drama Theatre, the Musical Comedy Theatre, the Theatre of Puppet Show, the philharmonic orchestra, and the Concert Hall, the famous Siberian Dance Group and Art Gallery represent culture and Art of the city.
Krasnoyarsk has a wonderful nature landscape. It is separated in two parts by Yenisey. The river is the watershed between western and eastern Siberia. It gives a special colorist to Krasnoyarsk; its residential areas are placed in both sides of the river. It is usual situation when a person lives in western Siberian and goes across the river to the eastern Siberia. Anton Chekhov, famous Russian writer, which was in Krasnoyarsk in 1890, wrote: “May the jealousy admirers of Volga River do not be offended, but I have never seen more beautiful river than Yenisey in my life”.
Krasnoyarsk today is one of the biggest cultural, industrial and scientific centers of Eastern Siberia. There are 12 universities and institutes, 5 theatres, a concert and an Organ Halls in the city, a number of museums & a picture gallery. The Krasnoyarsk region also attracts by its nature which includes several zones such as tundra, taiga and arctic desert. List fauna consists of great number spices of birds and mammals.
Highlights
Divnogorsk
It is a small town 40km far from Krasnoyarsk that appeared as the dam’s builders’ settlement. The town got its name because of the mountains that are located on the opposite side of the river (“divny” means amazing). In summer (from May till September), hourly boat sails up the Yenisey to Divnogorsk. After 30km it moors to the dock near the dam. Eye pleasant views are opening from the board of a boat.
Stolby Nature Reserve
The State Natural Reserve Stolby is situated on the right bank of the river Yenisey between the river Mana and the river Bazaiha near southwest outskirt of Krasnoyarsk. The first data concerning Stolby is referred to the eightieth years of XVIII century, but only in the second half of XIX century Krasnoyarsk “nature-lovers” began to visit these places not only for hunting, but also for rock-climbing.
Stolby massif is volcanic origin rocks consisting of grey - pink stone syeniteon the average Devonian. For millions of years rains and winds have cut out granite gigantic pillars that look like fantastic people and animals. Here we will have a chance to take some wonderful pictures of Krasnoyarsk and the Yenisey from a bird's eye height. In the tourist-excursion zone of the Stolby Reserve there is a shelter - zoo for Siberian animals. You'll see tame Siberian reindeer, lynxes, wolves, etc.
Museums of Krasnoyarsk
The leading 19th century Russian painter Vasily Surikov was born in Krasnoyarsk and live here. The two-floor log house that was built in 1830 by father and grandfather of the painter is now the Surikov Museum-Estate and it is worth to visit. The biggest part of displays (private items of him and his family, documents and pictures) was inherited to museum by painter’s heirs. The museum has painter’s works from the earliest period – childhood and youth, student’s works and also portraits, landscapes and sketches for big works.
Local Regional Studies Museum
Krasnoyarsk Regional Studies museum was founded by local archeology enthusiasts in the 1889. The collection featured items found at the place of ancient stops, and ethnographical expeditions at Khakassia and Tuva. History of Siberian region: from the ancient times to now. The main historical events and ethnic cultures are covered at the exhibitions and there are 11 permanent expositions in the museum: "Ancient civilizations on the shore of Yenisey river", "Siberian ethnic cultures", "Biological memory" (paleontology), "Tungus phenomenon" (exhibition dedicated to Tungus meteorite, foundings, theories, etc.), "Nature of Krasnoyarsk region", "Russian culture of XVI - XX centuries", "Nature. Human. Planet" (dedicated to the latest developments).
Overall, the museum is one of the best of this kind in Siberia and is definitely worth a visit.

Located in the central part of Siberia, Krasnoyarsk Kray covers 2.34 million square kilometers, or 13.6 percent of entire Russia.
